World, Meet X-Lite 4.0

Today we posted a link to the release candidate for a pretty major update to our X-Lite product. X-Lite version 4.0 has a completely new look and feel compared to the previous version of X-Lite, and is based on the same skinning engine that is used in our Bria product.
In terms of the audio and video, the majority of the functionality is the same as the previous product. So essentially it’s the same product most of you have grown to know and love, just with a new look and feel.
One of the main differences with X-Lite’s user interface compared to Bria is that we’ve continued the tradition of making X-Lite dialpad-centric (since we still get a great deal of positive feedback about that configuration). There’s also a full address book, allowing drag and drop calling as well as calling by name.
We’re still tweaking the skin and adjusting a few things, so I wouldn’t be surprised if what we ultimately release is slightly different than what you see here. But since we figure we’re pretty close we thought we’d give people a preview.
We have a pretty exciting road-map in place for X-Lite, so stay tuned for a few more releases over the next little while.
If you want to try it out, feel free to download the release candidate and play around.

We have plans for a Mac version of X-Lite 4.0, but no specific date yet. Please keep checking back here for more information.

I downloaded the RC and installed it but, unless I’m missing something that is very well hidden, the program is not functional: the “OK” button on the account settings page is disabled no matter what I type in there, and the rest of the program has no functionality at all (other than the options and other non-functional menus). What is wrong?
On a side note, I saw the video resolution options and I have a comment that I hope you would consider. I understand that sending high-resolution video is a feature you want to reserve for your paid versions. However, showing a larger-sized video screen (same bandwidth), even if it is simply by replicating the pixels (i.e., no fancy smoothing), would be a major improvement for people with limited eyesight. Even with my good vision, I still struggle with the tiny 160×120 window of X-Lite - you can barely see what’s going on. Come on, be ADA-friendly (Americans with Disabilities Act)!

I see by your other comments in the queue that you figured it out. That’s actually feedback we’ve received from a few people. Between X-Lite 3.0 and X-Lite 4.0, we’ve changed the proxy configuration pages slightly, and some people have found the transition confusing. We’ll add a release notes in future versions to point the differences out.

I take that back - I figured out the “very well hidden” trick: the user ID now includes the domain… Sorry!
I’m experimenting with video now and I might be taking back the other comment about the video - the video window does seem to be resizable!

Yes, the receiving video window can be freely resized! This is exactly what I was expecting. Now you just need to chase the bugs out and release it. Do you have a public bug log or something where we can check what issues are known and to report those that are not known?

At this time, no, our bug log is not public. The main reason for that is that we have many bugs that are for customers that haven’t yet announced the products they are working on. I’ll try to see if we can figure out a way to show some of the bugs here though somehow.

That is perfectly fine, we’ll be patient with obvious bugs (figuring, you know about them). The decision to base X-Lite on Bria versus Eyebeam was very good and I’m sure it will be to your benefit (it obviously will be to the benefit of your users). I just had my brother across the pond test the new version and it worked great for him. Now, he doesn’t have to strain his eyes to see what I’m doing and my other relatives, who couldn’t see much before (advanced age), will finally be able to see their grand-kids. Thank you again!

Glad to hear Adam, thanks for the feedback.

Another Adam - not the previous poster. I have to say I don’t like the visual look of the new X-Lite 4 - I much prefer the rounded 3D shape of 3 which seems more like a finished professional and “solid” device rather than the flat 2D look of version 4. Hopefully you will give 4 some more life and depth and shading before you are finished with it.

What about a Linux version? The current version is woefully behind, almost abandonware. With all the toolkits available now, you guys should be able to make all three versions (Win/Mac/Lin) almost identical.

We actually don’t get a lot of requests for a Linux version, especially for any of our commercial products. Windows is obviously our #1 priority since the majority of our users are still on Windows. Mac is #2, and Linux is a very distant #3. We’d love to support all three simultaneously, but since X-Lite is primarily driven by the requirements and customers for Bria, many of which are using Windows or Mac, we unfortunately don’t spend a lot of time on the Linux version. But if enough people request it in the future, it’s probably something we’ll take another look at.

Really, it works perfect for me too! It’s amazing!

@Another Adam - Yah, we have a designer working on the look and feel as we speak. That was just an early beta so people could play around with it. But yet, the skin will be a bit more polished before we officially release.

+1 for Linux, please.

It looks like the X-Lite 4.0RC has been set to expire after 30 days because today I got a message “Evaluation complete. Thank you for evaluating X-Lite” and it would not start. Will there be another pre-release issued to the public? So far, it has been working well, except the problem of disconnecting when the video is started and at least one party has low bandwidth.

Yes, sorry about that. We originally had meant to release the final version before that copy expired. I’ll post a new version shortly.

Ok I got the “evaluation complete. thank you for evaluating X-lite” today. Any way around that. I really need to use X-lite 4.0 since it works much better than 3.0 and I work at a help desk and we use X-lite as our softphone.
From Duanes post:
“Yes, sorry about that. We originally had meant to release the final version before that copy expired. I’ll post a new version shortly.”
How shortly is shortly? any ETA?
Anyone know a way to bypass the evaluate complete message?
Anyone know when the new download will be available?
Is X-lite 4.0 going final soon?
By the way this is a complement to X-lite 4.0 not trying to complain but I really prefer it to X-lite 3.0 and it just flat seems to work better.

Have you checked the support forums?
Try manually defining a stun server. Put in stun.xten.net and see if that helps.
Some corporate firewalls block UDP completely, so X-Lite may not work without a relay in your case.
